Dental Foundation Training

In order to practice in the UK, newly qualified dentists are required to complete a year of vocational training. During this year Dental Foundation trainees are permitted to practice on NHS patients at an approved dental practice. Trainees are also required to attend a specified number of study days over the 12 months to further expand their knowledge and experience. Trainees are mentored by their Trainer, who is based at the practice and who has been specially selected by the regional Department of Postgraduate Dental Education as an experienced practitioner.

Each approved dental practice falls into one of a number of regional schemes which is overseen by an Associate Dean for Foundation Training. Training Programme Directors are responsible for arranging the programme of study days and providing advice to both their trainers and trainees.

For more information on the Dental Foundation Training Curriculum please see the Blue Guide.

The Dental Foundation Training year starts in September. Prospective trainees apply during their final year of undergraduate study. Recruitment takes place nationally for DFT places and details of the process can be found on the London Deanery website.

 The Schemes

Berkshire Scheme

Located in the excellent John Lister House postgraduate centre at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, the facilities provide the perfect environment for an array of high quality speakers and engaging study days. These are varied and interactive, involving anything from hands-on sessions in the skills lab, to roleplay with actors!

The Berkshire scheme works closely with other Thames Valley schemes and has several shared day releases. Berkshire Foundation Dentists will be able to attend a large UK dental conference, as well as a leadership and team building event early on in the Foundation year. There are also trips to London to the BDA and the GDC. The whole ethos of the scheme is to inspire, support and achieve, and we are fortunate to have a very high calibre of experienced and dedicated trainers to help you.

The Practices on the scheme are situated in East Berkshire, which offers a host of beautiful and vibrant towns that have excellent access to London and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy city, town or country living. Windsor is full of restaurants, bars and clubs for those with more outgoing cultural tastes! The area is also popular for triathlons, with Dorney Lake, Virginia Waters and Windsor Great Park all near-by. Royal Ascot and the Henley Regatta are popular events in the social calendar. There are excellent train links to London and Oxford (Slough to Paddington in 17 minutes!) and road links to the M4 and M40 could not be easier.

Buckinghamshire Scheme

The Buckinghamshire scheme is based in Milton Keynes, which enjoys a central location with very easy access to London, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge. This scheme has developed over the years into one of the most sought after schemes not least because of the opportunities on offers to our Foundation Dentists. Our training practices are all of an extremely high standard and our highly qualified trainers will work with you throughout your year to ensure that you achieve your true potential.

Bucks scheme welcomes any opportunity to have fun while learning, which is why we start our year with a residential trip to encourage you to combine learning with teambuilding and leadership, skills that will help you to develop in the future. We also visit the one dental conference during the year and this will encourage you to see how dentistry develops with new ideas and technologies. You study days will also include visits to the BDA, GDC and other interesting study days in.

In Milton Keynes our study days are held in the relaxed postgraduate centre where we enjoy having our own clinical skills suite. Study days are a combination of problem-based learning alongside practical skills on oral surgery, endodontics and advanced restorative procedures as well as small group tutorials and learning from each other’s experiences.

Oxfordshire Scheme

The Oxfordshire scheme has been running for over 20 years and during that time has developed an enviable reputation as one of the finest schemes available, backed up with two winners and three runners up of the national DDU 'trainer of the year award'. The scheme is built on quality and experience. With a collection of dedicated trainers and beautifully furbished training practices waiting to support and guide you through your first exciting year as a dentist, you are assured of a memorable experience.

The scheme supports the theory that learning should be fun, this is backed up with our three day residential event where learning is combined with an outdoors leadership and team building challenge. We usually also make visits to London to the GDC, BDA and Faculty of General Dental Practitioners study days.

The year provides a mixed learning approach of hands on days in the new skills room, small group tutorials and more formal lectures. Each day starts with a 1 hour problem based learning session with the training programme director, providing time to explore the experiences you have had during the week. All speakers have been carefully selected over the years and include internationally and nationally recognised experts in their fields.

Portsmouth Scheme

The Portsmouth scheme is held at the new Portsmouth Queen Alexandra Hospital and is a comprehensive 30 day study programme covering the Foundation Training Curriculum. We utilise many acclaimed educators and include hands on clinical skills days covering crown and bridgework, endodontics and oral surgery together with two residential courses, including a national conference for dentists. The scheme has links with the academy which provides an outreach centre for Kings College undergraduate dental students as well as training dental care professionals.

All training practices and trainers have been carefully vetted and represent the highest professional standards. Portsmouth trainers have all undergone additional postgraduate education, and many currently have or are studying for postgraduate certificates in education.

Portsmouth and the surrounding area Portsmouth is a city on the move with its modern university, modern shopping centre and waterside restaurants. The amazing 170m high Spinnaker Tower situated on the waterfront of Gunwharf Quays offers spectacular 23 mile views over Portsmouth’s busy harbour attracting your view to the Isle of Wight, just a few miles from the mainland. Winchester Scheme

Winchester is a vibrant university city with good access to the rest of the UK and beyond. The city has a wealth of history, charm and mystery as the ancient capital of England. All sports and outdoor activities are readily available. Many training practices are award winning general dental practices. Trainers are keen to share their success with you and the majority have completed or are completing postgraduate qualifications specifically to support foundation dentists to become better dentists.

The day release course offers nationally and internationally acclaimed speakers. The superb clinical skills facility was opened in 2011. Each year we normally attend the BDA Scientific Conference which provides a cutting edge insight into the NHS and UK based dentistry. This event is a brilliant social and national highlight in the foundation training calendar.

Following the first year of Dental Foundation Training, there are excellent opportunities within Health Education England working across Thames Valley and Wessex, to continue onto Dental Core Training in hospital and salaried services. We offer supportive career advice and guidance to all of our foundation dentists. The dental community in Hampshire is enthusiastic and very active, offering good links with the new Portsmouth Academy. There is a strong postgraduate program for GDPs and FDs providing the opportunity to meet specialists and high achieving GDPs from around the region.
