Out of Programme Experience

Doctors wishing to take time out from their training programme - called, Out of Programme Experience - must have the approval of their Dean, and are advised to discuss any plans with their Training Programme Director or Educational Supervisor in the first instance. It is possible to take time out for a career break, to do research, or to gain clinical experience. There are details of the rules around Out of Programme Experience in the Gold Guide to Specialty Training.

It is still possible to work abroad for a time. Bear in mind that you will need to consider:

  • Your Visa
  • Your Work Permit
  • Appropriate immunisation

It is a good idea to check with your new employer, any agencies assisting you to find work, the BMA and the embassies (both British, and of your destination), in order to ensure that all appropriate documentation is in place before you travel.
