This training programme combines clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. It fulfils curriculum requirements for both the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Pathologists. The aim is to create infection specialists with a broad understanding of prevention, diagnosis and management of infections, together with a deep understanding of laboratory management and diagnostic issues.

Modules take place at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust, and Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust (Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals). Rotations will be arranged by the TPD , firstly taking into account the training requirements of all the trainees, secondly, specific individual requirements, and finally, personal preferences.

Modules include clinical microbiology (bench rotation, medical, blood culture and surgical consultations, intensive care unit wards rounds, infection control, and virology), infectious diseases / HIV, bone infection, general medicine, and intensive care. The virology module includes hepatitis clinics. By negotiation, there are also options for attachments in related specialties, for example, paeditatric infectious diseases, genito urinary medicine, or travel medicine. There is a training half day once a week in addition to other education sessions that are module based. The trainee will have regular teaching commitments. At present the trainee is expected to obtain MRCPath during their training.

A period of OOPE for research or sub-specialty training is encouraged.
