Oxford School of Surgery

The Thames Valley School of Surgery manages postgraduate medical and dental education across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. Overall, the School is responsible for 48 core and 150 higher specialty surgical trainees along with several academic training posts.

The School oversees all aspects of training in the ten recognised surgical specialties and core training. Its primary aim is to maintain high quality training, ensuring trainees have access to the highest standards of teaching at all stages of their training programme.

The School takes an active role in annual assessments and appraisals, preparation for examinations, practical skills training and the development of non-technical skills. The School has close links to the University of Oxford and other Universities in the region which provide health related education, teaching and research opportunities. Oxford has an excellent reputation in surgical research and pioneering surgery. Trainees are encouraged to become involved in the research either as part of an academic post, alongside their clinical training or through our trainee research collaborative OxSCAR

Thames Valley offers training courses in Medical Education and Medical Leadership to ensure our trainees are prepared for all aspects of their jobs as consultants in the future. Training has to comply with the requirements of the surgical curriculum so the School works with the Royal Colleges and Specialty Advisory Committees at all levels.

We have a high conversion rate for core surgical trainees applying to speciality training and from CCT into consultant posts. We also have excellent pass rates for both the MRCS and FRCS.

The aims of the School are:

  • To prepare and equip surgeons to meet the challenges of surgical practice and deliver the highest standard of care for patients.
  • To deliver surgical education programmes that meet GMC quality standards and embrace College guidelines and ethos.
  • To recognise and respond to the needs of our trainees, trainers and their employers.
